About us

The mission of the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art is to promote the study and understanding of Islamic arts and cultures.

DDFIA pursues its mission in two ways:

  • Through Shangri La in Honolulu, which is owned and supported by DDFIA and undertakes a range of activities as a center for learning about Islamic arts and cultures; and
  • Through the Building Bridges Program, which is based in New York and awards grants to promote the use of arts and media to improve Americans’¬†understanding of Muslim societies.

Based in New York, DDFIA is one of three operating foundations supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

  1. Hello, I wish I could’ve thanked Ms. Duke for her efforts to increase understanding of Islamic culture through her beautiful art collection. Being a Muslim American woman in a post9/11 world, its rare to hear anything positive about Islam on the radio. I was so moved when I heard about this collection on KQED, and spent a considerable amount of time looking at these gorgeous pieces (when I should be getting to work!). I hope to one day see them in person if I get to go to Hawaii.
I want to thank the family of Ms Duke for continuing this foundation. I’m sure they have received considerable backlash for doing so. I wanted to express how much it meant to me to lead of people who have the foresight that efforts to create understanding through art can further peace quite effectively. Thank you.
